Luigi's letter is remarkable, I encourage you to read it in TFA, it's very short.

He's either a remarkably empathetic murderer, or an extremely high functioning sociopath.

I think we tend to over-dramatize the killer state-of-mind. I.e. I think we underestimate how "normal" it is for a stable, emotionally intelligent person to be willing to kill, when they or their kith or kin are wronged egregiously or heartlessly. It's often practicality (means, punishment, etc), rather than morality, that is the block.
